Indonesia targets early 2027 operations for 1,369 fishing villages
Construction is under way at 1,269 locations, while another 100 are preparing for operations under a wider programme covering 5,000 villages.

Indonesia plans to bring 1,369 Red and White Fishing Villages into full operation by early 2027, according to the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. Infrastructure work for these locations is targeted for completion during 2025 and 2026.
Speaking in Bantul, Yogyakarta, the ministry’s Secretary-General, Andy Artha Donny Oktopura, said the projects form part of President Prabowo Subianto’s target to modernise 5,000 fishing villages in stages. Construction is continuing at 1,269 locations, with the other 100 preparing to begin operations.
Before the villages become fully operational, the ministry plans to expand technical support for administrators, offer education and training to fishers and local communities, and help them access financing. Andy said the programme also requires changes to working practices and operating standards, rather than infrastructure alone.
Those changes include providing ice through village facilities and improving how catches are marketed. Andy said portable cold storage would let fishers preserve their catch’s quality instead of selling immediately after landing, helping them obtain higher prices. He described the programme’s aims as improving coastal development, fishers’ productivity and welfare, and the quality of fishery products.
