Vietnam’s Party General Secretary and President To Lam urged Vietnam and Laos to turn agreements between their leaders into concrete economic projects during a Hanoi meeting with Lao National Assembly President Sonexay Siphandone, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Lam asked lawmakers from both countries to support their governments in carrying out trade and investment agreements and major projects involving transport connections, energy and minerals. He said cooperation should reflect each country’s needs and strengths.

He also urged action to resolve obstacles and establish legal conditions that would enable businesses and local authorities to broaden cooperation. Lam said the parties, states and legislatures of both countries needed institutional reform and more effective governance.

For parliamentary relations, Lam proposed closer links among legislative agencies, specialised committees, delegations of lawmakers and local People’s Councils. He called for more sharing of information and practical experience on lawmaking, oversight and decisions concerning major national issues.

Sonexay said the Lao legislature would continue working closely with its Vietnamese counterpart to implement agreements made by senior leaders and the parliamentary bodies. He briefed Lam on developments in Laos and his discussions with Vietnamese National Assembly President Tran Thanh Man, and expressed gratitude for Vietnam’s support.
