Vietnam and Japan aim for fruit market access in 2027
Vietnamese pomelos and Japanese grapes will take priority, with passion fruits, peaches and other products to follow.

Vietnam and Japan will give priority to approval procedures for pomelos from Vietnam and grapes from Japan, targeting reciprocal market access for the 2027 harvest season. The plan was discussed in Japan on November 6 by Vietnamese agriculture and environment minister Trinh Viet Hung and his Japanese counterpart, Takebe Arata.
Subsequent work will cover Vietnamese passion fruits, peaches from Japan, pet food made in Vietnam containing poultry meat, and Japanese pufferfish. Takebe requested faster procedures for agricultural and animal products. Hung agreed to examine Japan’s requests on pufferfish and meat separately for each product, on a reciprocal basis.
Japan also sought shorter assessments for its seafood exporters applying to enter Vietnam. Hung promised to accelerate the review of their registration applications and urged the countries to coordinate more closely on technical issues.
Hung also sought deeper cooperation through the countries’ agricultural vision covering 2025-30, which was signed in September 2025. He requested Japanese support for green and circular farming, lower emissions, climate adaptation, digitalisation and smart farming. He encouraged Japanese companies to invest in Vietnam’s agricultural production, transfer technology and help build sustainable value chains, highlighting crop varieties, technology used after harvest and food processing.
