Indonesia will use COP31 in Turkiye to set out legislative work supporting its climate targets, including the Just Climate Change Control Bill, according to People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Deputy Speaker Eddy Soeparno.

Speaking at a Jakarta media briefing organised by the Government Communication Agency (Bakom), Soeparno said parliament was working on three bills. Alongside the climate measure, Indonesia is finalising the New and Renewable Energy Bill and changes to the Electricity Law.

He said the climate bill’s name had been changed to include “Just” following a proposal from Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat.

The delegation will also outline efforts to speed up the energy transition and waste-to-energy processing. Soeparno said Indonesia was ready to reaffirm its commitment to an energy transition underpinning economic growth, with new and renewable energy targeted to account for 70 per cent of the national energy mix by 2045.

Waste-to-energy efforts are intended to tackle waste management problems and cut methane emissions. Soeparno also said Indonesia would highlight its blue carbon reserves, with the initiatives supported through stronger regulation, governance, collaboration across sectors and long-term financing.
