Phu Quoc seeks special economic zone status
An Giang provincial leaders have requested a completed dossier for consideration by the Ministry of Finance and the Government.

Leaders of Vietnam’s An Giang Provincial People’s Council have asked the provincial People’s Committee to urgently complete an application seeking special economic zone status for Phu Quoc. The dossier is to go to the Ministry of Finance and the Government for consideration.
The application concerns Phu Quoc special zone’s full administrative territory: 575.29 square kilometres with 179,060 residents at the end of 2025. Neither figure includes Tho Chau special zone. The proposed area is linked to international airport infrastructure and surrounding maritime space.
The proposal envisages a legal framework allowing special arrangements for administration, planning and finance. These are expected to support the island’s development as an internationally recognised services and marine eco-tourism centre and a growth pole in preparation for APEC 2027.
Phu Quoc recorded approximately ₫114.83 trillion in total social investment over 2021–2025. Retail sales of goods and service revenue were around ₫198.51 trillion during that period, while visitor numbers exceeded 8.26 million in 2025.
