Singapore Management University (SMU) established its first Chinese centre in Shenzhen on 22 October, announcing four cooperation agreements at the launch. The university said the centre would support education and business ties linking China, Singapore and Southeast Asia.

Country Director Victor Huang leads SMU China, which occupies premises in China Resources Tower, Nanshan District. The university said it would handle enquiries from potential students, academic institutions and organisations, while directing businesses interested in Southeast Asian expansion towards its regional centres.

The agreements name Go Global, Shenzhen Foundation for International Exchange and Cooperation, CIIC International Business Development Co. Ltd. and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen as partners. Their scope includes student placements, graduate recruitment, leadership training, academic exchanges and support for companies expanding internationally.

Under the university partnership, researchers plan to examine social media and technological changes affecting financial markets. The agreement also provides for visiting research faculty and PhD students to undertake short exchanges.

SMU said its Chinese network comprises 60 university collaborators and 7,000 alumni. More than 850 students have completed internships across over 350 companies in China since 2011. The Shenzhen opening advances the university’s five-year SMU2030 strategy and adds to its existing overseas operations in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.
