Indonesia should establish a firm position in the debate over stopping gas exports to Singapore without allowing the issue to become a conflict, National Economic Council chairman Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said on 27 October 2026.

Speaking to reporters in Jakarta, Luhut said responsibility for gas export policy rested with Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia. He called for a careful assessment before the government decided its next steps and said he believed Bahlil had undertaken that work.

Luhut said he had discussed the matter with Bahlil, who had conveyed the government's concerns about gas exports to Singapore. He also urged domestic reflection to improve policy and strengthen Indonesia's position on strategic matters.

According to Luhut, the president had provided clear guidance on the government's stance. He said other ASEAN countries should also listen to Indonesia's views.

Luhut gave no details of the assessment or any concrete measures the government would take, leaving the handling of the issue to Bahlil.
