Investment approvals for the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone have reached RM88.83 billion through the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, a joint ministerial statement said. The projects represent 28,755 potential jobs, including 12,796 linked to projects already implemented.

The Straits Times reported that the statement followed the first Johor-Singapore Cooperation Ministerial Committee meeting. Ministers also welcomed investments from Singapore and Singapore-based companies, which Singapore had referred to the Investment Facilitation Centre – Johor.

The zone occupies more than 3,500 square kilometres, all within Malaysia’s Johor state. Singapore’s role as a partner includes helping to coordinate investment, trade and connections across the border.

Singapore’s Minister for National Development Chee Hong Tat said the initiative could support wider cooperation beyond the zone, Channel News Asia reported. His examples included better cross-border taxi services, the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link and continuing discussions about improving ferry services.

Malaysia’s Minister of Economy YB Akmal Nasir said the zone’s blueprint would likely be launched to coincide with the annual Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat. He expressed hope that the blueprint would help build stronger commitment from both countries in 2027.
