Inpex completes design work early for US$22 billion Abadi Masela project
Authorities hope to reach a final investment decision by late 2026 or January 2027 at the latest, with commercial gas production targeted for 2030.

Design work for Indonesia’s US$22 billion Abadi Masela LNG project was finished in October, putting Japanese energy company Inpex three months ahead of its year-end deadline. The completed stage covers front-end engineering design, known as FEED.
At a ceremony in Jakarta, Djoko Siswanto, head of the Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas (SKK Migas), said the earlier completion would speed up development. He said authorities hoped to make the final investment decision by late 2026, with January 2027 as the latest date.
Inpex Masela Ltd. president director Kenji Hasegawa said the design covered subsea infrastructure, an export pipeline for gas, an FPSO unit and LNG facilities on land. The company is now focusing on moving towards the engineering, procurement, construction and installation stage and the investment decision, he said.
The development is in the Masela Block in Maluku’s Tanimbar Islands. Its planned gas capacity is 1,380 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD), while targeted annual LNG output is 9.5 million tonnes. It will also supply domestic users with 100 MMSCFD of pipeline gas and produce condensate at 35,000 barrels a day.
Construction formally started after President Prabowo Subianto’s groundbreaking ceremony on July 16. Commercial gas production remains targeted for 2030.
