Investment in Indonesia’s special economic zones totalled Rp46 trillion between January and September 2026, generating 53,190 jobs, according to government figures. That put investment at approximately 67 per cent of the annual target of Rp69.1 trillion.

By September 30, 2026, cumulative investment in the zones stood at Rp382.1 trillion, while total employment generated reached 302,262 jobs.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the zones supported the government’s ambition for 8 per cent economic growth by attracting investment, creating employment and raising regional productivity. He identified stronger sectors, better services and greater business capacity as opportunities for further development.

Healthcare is one area of focus. The government expects specialised zones to curb foreign exchange outflows by making high-quality medical care available domestically. Deputy Health Minister Dante Saksono Harbuwono said their development would also draw investment into pharmaceuticals and medical devices and enable knowledge exchange between Indonesian and foreign medical professionals.

Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said her ministry was ready to help develop six designated tourism zones. Proposed measures include workforce training, events and promotion of wellness and marine tourism.

Deputy Industry Minister Faisol Riza called for better services and infrastructure standards to make the zones models for other industrial areas. Manpower Minister Yassierli said they could link employers’ skills needs with vocational education and internships, becoming centres for workforce development.
