Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has agreed to work with state utility PLN on reliable electricity for its Red and White Fishermen’s Villages (KNMP) programme. The ministry announced the partnership on 26 October, saying it would support fisheries infrastructure and coastal businesses.

The agreement was signed by Lotharia Latif, the ministry’s Director General of Capture Fisheries, and M. Fahrur Rozy, PLN’s Director of Retail and Commerce. Its scope also includes digitalisation, green ecosystem development, data sharing and capacity building.

Latif said sufficient power was expected to help operate facilities such as cold storage, ice production, fish auctions and processing units, as well as support local businesses.

His office will supply information on site requirements, networks and facilities. PLN will conduct joint site surveys with the ministry and help provide electricity under applicable regulations. Its subsidiaries and subholdings will also assist with digitalisation and green ecosystem development.

KKP had completed 100 KNMPs by 2025 and plans to extend the programme to 1,269 locations in 2026. The planned hub-and-spoke structure links main activity centres with satellite sites.

Since operational trials began in early June 2026, the programme has recorded transactions involving 719 tons of fish worth Rp18.77 billion across 65 locations. The fish went to domestic markets in cities including Jakarta, Kendari, Medan and Surabaya.
