Indonesia opens first patent forum to connect inventors with industry
Domestic patent commercialisation remains below five per cent, while Indonesian applicants made up 34.56 per cent of patent applications in 2016-2025.

Indonesia is hosting its inaugural Patent Business Forum (FBPI) in Jakarta on November 3-5, 2026, seeking to turn more patented inventions into commercial products and partnerships. More than 3,000 participants are attending, drawn from government, research, industry, finance, small businesses and the public.
Figures from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) put national patent commercialisation below five per cent. Domestic applicants represented 34.56 per cent of all patent applications during 2016-2025. DJKI head Hermansyah Siregar said the figures showed a need to strengthen Indonesian research and innovation and generate greater economic value from patents.
Speaking at the opening, Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas said protecting intellectual property, including patents, was part of his ministry's mandate. But he stressed that certificates had little value without commercial use and that sustaining the intellectual property ecosystem required involvement beyond his ministry.
DJKI held four business-matching events in 2026 to link university and research-institution inventors and patent holders with industry. Through FBPI, it aims to foster licensing, joint technology development, investment and access to financing. The programme features exhibitions, pitching sessions, valuation and financing discussions, and policy dialogues. DJKI and the World Intellectual Property Organization are also presenting the Indonesia Patent Awards to recognise contributions to the patent ecosystem.
