Thai rice exports forecast at 6.5 million tonnes, below target
Asian markets bought 13.3% more Thai rice in January–September 2026, with Malaysia's purchases reaching a 20-year high.

Rice shipments from Thailand could total 6.5 million tonnes in 2026, falling short of the 7 million-tonne goal, Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) director-general Arada Fuangtong said, despite rising sales to Asian buyers.
For January–September, the DFT recorded rice exports of 4.99 million tonnes valued at US$2.96 billion or ฿94.9 billion. Asian destinations took 1.71 million tonnes, a year-on-year rise of 13.3%, compared with Africa's 1.73 million tonnes.
According to Arada, Philippine purchases jumped 263% year-on-year as the country sought to strengthen food security amid concerns over El Niño. Imports by Malaysia rose 155%, reaching their highest volume in 20 years. Hong Kong recorded growth of 63%, while Mozambique's purchases increased 2%.
The Middle East war and resulting partial closure of the Strait of Hormuz affected exports to Iraq, which took over 1 million tonnes of Thai rice in 2025. Indonesia halted Thai rice imports in 2026 as it sought to increase domestic consumption.
Tariffs affected shipments of Thai hom mali rice to the US, where high inflation also weakened demand.
To boost shipments, the DFT plans missions and importer meetings covering Hong Kong, Japan, the Philippines and Africa. Its efforts also include international rice conferences and participation in trade exhibitions to build commercial relationships, promote Thai rice quality and obtain orders.
