Construction has started on a carton packaging plant in Dong Nai province, with Japanese group Oji investing US$110 million in the project. The factory, situated in Long Thanh High-Tech Park, will operate under Oji Liquid Pak (OLP) and produce aseptic cartons.

Beyond manufacturing food packaging, the plant will undertake research and development and offer technical services. Its activities will also include installing and maintaining machinery and equipment from Japan.

Kestutis Sliuzas, Oji Liquid Pak General Director, said packaging and other manufacturing industries were adopting standards that bring together recyclable materials, production efficiency and food safety.

Nguyen Quoc An, deputy head of the Dong Nai Industrial and Economic Zones Authority, said investments on this scale would help develop local industry and enable Vietnamese companies to participate more extensively in regional supply networks. The authority promised investors guidance and help with resolving implementation difficulties.

The Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency, part of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, puts Japan’s active investment projects in Vietnam at more than 5,800, with registered capital exceeding US$81 billion. Japanese businesses including Honda, Panasonic, Kao Vietnam and Sumitomo have continued operating and expanding in the country.
