Indonesia urged to keep market reforms on track after MSCI proposal
The National Economic Council also called for enforcement against capital-market violations as MSCI considers changing Indonesia’s market classification.

Indonesia’s National Economic Council (DEN) has recommended continuing capital-market reforms following MSCI’s proposal to reclassify the country’s stock market from emerging to standalone status, according to council deputy chair Mari Elka Pangestu.
Speaking after a limited meeting at Merdeka Palace in Central Jakarta on 20 October 2026, Mari said participants had discussed the implications of the proposed change. She said DEN wanted reforms already under way to continue, alongside enforcement measures that regulators had announced.
The council also urged action against capital-market violations. Mari said existing legislation gave stock-market regulators the authority to take firm measures against breaches.
The meeting was attended by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara and Bank Indonesia Governor Destry Damayanti. Dony Oskaria, head of the State-Owned Enterprises Regulatory Agency and chief operating officer of Danantara, also attended, along with other members of the cabinet responsible for economic affairs.
