Vietnam sought US input on its proposed APEC 2027 priorities during talks between Finance Minister Ngo Van Tuan and US Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs Erin Browne in Hong Kong on October 20. The discussions also covered bilateral financial cooperation.

Tuan said Vietnam planned to put forward four groups of priority themes for its APEC hosting year, aligned with APEC’s vision and the Incheon Action Plan. He sought US advice, experience and support to refine the proposals.

Browne welcomed the proposed priorities and said the US Treasury was ready to help Vietnam develop them into detailed action plans. She also expressed interest in closer cooperation within the two countries’ Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Tuan urged the US to move technical negotiations forward on a protocol to amend their bilateral tax agreement. He also requested US experience on mechanisms to screen technology in foreign direct investment projects.

Other requests included backing Vietnam’s position in talks on the Agreement on Reciprocal, Fair and Balanced Trade and granting the country market economy status at an early date.

Tuan reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to an investment environment that supports long-term operations by US companies and investors. He also invited Browne to Vietnam for working meetings and conferences under APEC 2027.
