Thailand and Myanmar discuss closer energy ties and joint ventures
Talks included possible new memoranda of understanding and projects in Dawei involving Russia, according to The Irrawaddy.

Thailand’s Energy Minister Akanat Prompan held talks in Naypyitaw with Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing on broadening energy and natural gas cooperation, The Irrawaddy reported. The discussions covered possible joint ventures and new memoranda of understanding as Thailand sought stronger energy ties with Myanmar.
Akanat separately discussed energy cooperation with Ko Ko Lwin, his Myanmar counterpart. Citing Myanmar regime media, The Irrawaddy said their talks included projects involving Thailand, Myanmar and Russia in Dawei, in the Tanintharyi Region.
The minister’s trip followed an inspection of development projects in Dawei by Min Aung Hlaing and Vice President Nyo Saw several days earlier. Min Aung Hlaing had also travelled to Bangkok in August, where he urged more investment in Myanmar.
According to The Irrawaddy, Thailand continues to be a major investor in Myanmar. It identified energy, manufacturing and border trade as sectors in which Thai investment is particularly prominent.
