Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK) wants three to four additional Islamic banks with structures and capacity approaching or matching PT Bank Syariah Indonesia Tbk (BSI), its banking supervision chief Dian Ediana Rae said on 3 November 2026.

Speaking at the Indonesia Islamic Finance Summit 2026 in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Dian said BSI was currently the only domestic Islamic bank with large capacity. He identified stronger capital as an important requirement for expanding the industry.

OJK put national Islamic finance assets at Rp3,307 trillion, up 9 per cent from 2025. Dian said growth could exceed 10 per cent if the industry had stronger structures and capital capacity. He also urged providers to develop products around public demand rather than simply replicate conventional banking models.

At the summit, OJK introduced three Islamic banking product guidelines intended to support financing for the real economy and services that meet customers’ needs:

  • Ijarah covers the use of assets without transferring ownership, including business premises, machinery and vehicles, with rent paid in instalments.
  • Ijarah Muntahiyah Bittamlik (IMBT) covers leases that end with an ownership transfer, for consumer needs such as homes and vehicles as well as productive assets.
  • Wakalah Penjualan Aset Ready Stock covers supply-chain financing, allowing suppliers to obtain liquidity by selling available inventory to banks without waiting for deferred payments from final buyers.
