Galunggong fishing closure off Palawan to start November 1
Restrictions on three types of fishing gear in the conservation area northeast of Palawan will remain in force until January 31, 2027.

The annual fishing closure for round scad, locally called galunggong, will start on November 1 in a conservation area northeast of Palawan, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Mimaropa. The three-month restriction prohibits catching the fish with purse seine, ring net and bag net gear until January 31, 2027.
BFAR Mimaropa said the closure allows the fish to mature and breed, helping sustain their population. The agency said the measure also aims to protect marine resources, support coastal communities’ livelihoods over the longer term and maintain fish supplies for present and future generations.
Separately, the Association of Fresh Fish Traders of the Philippines had warned that a potentially strong El Niño could disrupt fishing activity, including catches of small pelagic fish.
