Malampaya Phase 4 marked its first gas milestone on November 5, with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. leading a ceremony in Batangas City at the Malampaya Onshore Gas Plant. The project has completed drilling and gas testing at two Palawan wells.

The wells, Malampaya East-1 and Camago-3, are expected to keep Malampaya productive for about six more years, according to initial test results. Undersea infrastructure has also been installed to link them to the production platform.

GMA Network reported that the additions bring approximately 41.46 billion cubic feet in recoverable gas reserves. That gas could generate approximately 31.46 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, enough to power 13.11 million Filipino households for a year. Connecting the wells to the existing production system and raising output will continue in the coming months.

Marcos said making greater use of Malampaya’s gas would help make power prices more competitive by limiting reliance on imported energy affected by volatile international prices. He also said the development would help provide reliable energy during high oil prices and a very strong El Niño.

Batangas Governor Vilma Santos-Recto expressed hope that the development would draw foreign investment and bring residents more employment and livelihood opportunities.
