Indonesia ended rice imports for domestic use in 2025
The Government Communications Agency said rice output reached 34.69 million tons in 2025, while production is projected at 34.77 million tons in 2026.

Indonesia imported no rice to meet domestic consumption during 2025, according to the Government Communications Agency (Bakom), which attributed the halt to sufficient local supplies. Food self-sufficiency is a policy priority for President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka.
Kurnia Ramadhana, Bakom’s deputy for partnerships and media relations, said rice production totalled 34.69 million tons in 2025, a 13.29 per cent increase from 2024. State logistics company Bulog held government rice reserves of 3.248 million tons at the close of 2025.
For 2026, rice output is projected at 34.77 million tons, compared with estimated domestic demand of 31.10 million tons, Ramadhana said.
He linked the developments to measures introduced since October 20, 2024. These included changes to subsidised fertiliser distribution, the removal of 145 regulations and a 20 per cent cut in the maximum retail price of subsidised fertiliser to help reduce farmers’ production costs.
Ramadhana said the food security programme also seeks self-sufficiency in protein-rich fishery products. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries implemented the Red and White Fishing Villages programme at 100 locations in 2025, with 65 villages entering operational trials. The government aims to expand it to 1,386 locations by the end of 2026 to improve fisheries infrastructure, productivity and coastal economic growth.
