Vietnam’s Geleximco and China’s Chery Group have signed an agreement to investigate joint opportunities beyond vehicle manufacturing, including semiconductors, robotics and green energy. Batteries, environmental technology and shipbuilding are also among the areas they plan to study.

The companies aim to pool expertise and resources to develop industrial projects in Vietnam. Their stated goals include accessing new technologies, improving manufacturing capabilities and extending supply chains.

The groups already have a joint venture for a plant to manufacture and assemble vehicles under Chery’s Omoda and Jaecoo brands. Located at Hung Phu Industrial Park in what is now Hung Yen province, the project is expected to involve about US$800 million of investment over three phases. Its planned annual production capacity is 200,000 vehicles.

Separately, Geleximco has announced that it is progressing investment procedures for a semiconductor plant in Hung Yen. Construction is expected to start in November 2026, with the facility targeting commercial products in early 2028. The group plans to test Vietnamese-designed control ICs, sensors and power chips and incorporate them into electric vehicles and its wider industrial operations.

Chery is based in China’s Anhui province and started making cars in 1997. Its businesses also span automotive components, intelligent technologies and financial services. Chery Automobile’s worldwide vehicle sales exceeded 2.8 million in 2025, including more than 1.34 million exports.
