Indonesia's rupiah gained 0.28 per cent against the US dollar on 20 October 2026, closing at Rp17,980, according to Refinitiv data. The currency finished below Rp18,000 per dollar as the US dollar index weakened.

The rupiah opened at Rp18,010 per dollar, up 0.11 per cent, and strengthened by another 30 points before the close. At 15:00 WIB, the dollar index, which tracks the US currency against six major currencies, was down 0.22 per cent at 101.758.

Market attention also turned to Bank Indonesia's board of governors meeting on 20–21 October 2026. The central bank is scheduled to announce its benchmark interest-rate decision on 21 October.

Bank Permata economist Josua Pardede said a rate increase had become more likely following the rupiah's move beyond Rp18,000 per dollar, higher government securities yields and worsening investor sentiment after an MSCI announcement. His main scenario was a 25-basis-point rise in the BI-Rate to 6.00 per cent.

Josua said such an increase could support the appeal of rupiah assets, contain inflation expectations and bolster confidence in monetary policy. However, he cautioned that higher rates would not guarantee an immediate currency recovery because pressure also reflected increased perceptions of risk in Indonesia's financial markets.

He said concerns over shareholding transparency, suspected coordinated trading and regulatory enforcement could not be addressed through monetary policy alone. Any rate increase would also need foreign-exchange intervention, liquidity management and coordination with the government and regulators, he added.
