Phu Quoc speeds up water projects ahead of APEC 2027
Two new water plants will have a combined daily capacity of 86,000 cubic metres, while the existing system meets only about 30 per cent of demand.

Authorities in Vietnam’s An Giang province are pushing ahead with reservoirs and treatment plants in Phu Quoc Special Zone despite rainy-season conditions, VNA reported. The projects are intended to tackle persistent clean-water shortages and support preparations for the APEC 2027 Economic Leaders’ Meeting.
The province is investing in water supply complexes at Cua Can and Duong Dong 2. Both reservoir projects face a completion deadline before May 30, 2027. Cua Can Water Plant is designed to treat 50,000 cubic metres daily, while Duong Dong 2 Water Plant will have a daily capacity of 36,000 cubic metres.
The island currently relies mainly on Duong Dong Reservoir, which holds 5.9 million cubic metres, and a treatment plant capable of processing 24,000 cubic metres a day. That system supplies Duong Dong, An Thoi and sections of Cua Duong and Duong To, covering only about 30 per cent of demand.
Work at Cua Can Water Plant was about 20.5 per cent complete as of September 23. Nguyen Lam Duc Dung, a technical officer with BIWELCO Construction Investment JSC, said the contractor was addressing weather-related difficulties and aiming to start operations in late March 2027.
At Duong Dong 2 Water Plant, trial piling and earthworks for two storage tanks have been completed. Crews have installed 15.4km of a planned 33km pipeline. The plant is also scheduled for completion before May 30, 2027.
An Giang provincial People’s Committee Vice Chairman Le Trung Ho said water infrastructure was needed both for the meeting and for residents, with benefits extending beyond the event. He said a Prime Ministerial decision had identified 21 key projects to serve APEC 2027 directly.
