Pegadaian plans wider gold banking business in Indonesia
Gold deposits allow customers to earn a return while supplying material that manufacturers can borrow for working capital, according to Damar.

Indonesia’s PT Pegadaian (Persero) plans to expand its gold banking products and related services in 2026, Damar told CNBC Indonesia at the Danantara BUMN Progress Update 2026 on 16 October. He said the company wanted to make gold investment easier for the public.
Damar cited a study estimating that people hold 1,800 tonnes of gold that is simply kept in storage. He said gold banking could bring those holdings into financial institutions, allowing them to be put to use rather than remain idle.
Among Pegadaian’s products are gold deposits, which Damar said enable customers to place their gold with the company and receive a return. Craftspeople and manufacturers can then borrow the deposited gold as working capital to produce necklaces, bracelets and other jewellery.
Damar said this arrangement connects activities along the gold supply chain and could contribute to Indonesia’s economic growth. He also said Pegadaian wanted to improve public understanding of how to invest in gold or use it to meet economic needs.
