More than half of Indonesian respondents in a study by payment infrastructure provider Xendit and Cube said they had abandoned an online purchase in the three months before the survey. The leading reason was that their preferred payment option was unavailable, according to the report.

The study combined Xendit transaction data with a survey of 6,000 consumers across six countries, including 1,000 in Indonesia. Indonesia’s 51% purchase-abandonment figure was the highest among the countries surveyed.

Digital wallets were the most widely used option for online payments, used by about 60% of respondents. Among those users, 70% said they paid with wallets for at least half their purchases. The report found no single dominant provider among GoPay, OVO, DANA and ShopeePay.

Xendit’s platform recorded a 142% increase in QRIS transactions between January 2025 and April 2026, while credit card transactions grew 83% over the same period.

Cash on delivery was losing ground: 4 in 10 Indonesian respondents said they used it much less frequently than a year earlier. Discounts or cashback, rather than convenience, were the main reasons consumers switched payment methods. Faster refunds and payment security were also factors behind the move towards real-time payments.

Xendit president Nazim Ali said businesses needed to understand how payment preferences were changing, rather than simply offering more options. He said the company was also focusing on the broader payment process, including refunds and resolving transaction problems.
