US private equity firm KKR plans to provide more than RM2.6 billion to Gentari Renewable India Pte Ltd to help finance expansion and cut debt, The Economic Times reported. The business is part of Gentari Sdn Bhd, the renewable energy arm of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas).

Under the proposed arrangement, KKR would not receive an immediate equity interest but could acquire one later, according to the report. The money is expected to fund renewable energy and green hydrogen developments, alongside possible purchases of stakes in Gentari's existing Indian joint ventures.

Gentari Renewable India bought a solar and wind portfolio with capacity of 1.6 gigawatts from Brookfield Asset Management in March 2025 for US$900 million. In May 2024, it acquired operating solar assets totalling 185 megawatts from Fortum Corporation and its partners.

Gentari's Indian partnerships include work with ReNew on solar, wind and hybrid power developments, and with AM Green on hydrogen and ammonia production. KKR already invests in Hero Future Energies and Serentica Renewables, while its IndiGrid exposure covers electricity transmission and renewable energy assets.
