Japan has announced US$164,269 in assistance for cashew processing in Cambodia’s Kratie province. The funding will go to the Kratie Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to build facilities for storing and drying cashews and provide equipment to measure moisture.

The project covers three agricultural communities, with three storage and drying facilities to be built and three moisture-measuring devices to be provided. Misumi Takahito, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim at Japan’s embassy in Cambodia, said approximately 500 community members would benefit through better post-harvest processing, helping increase the quantity of cashews they can sell.

Misumi and provincial agriculture department director Try Sopheak signed the agreement on October 2. The assistance comes through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, also known as Kusanone.

Kusanone has operated in Cambodia since 1991. The programme has provided more than US$72 million to local authorities and non-governmental organisations for more than 700 projects across the country.
