Vietnam Electricity (EVN) and its Power Project Management Board No. 2 have begun construction of the Quang Trach II LNG-fired power plant in Quang Tri province. Investment in the project exceeds ₫40.1 trillion (US$1.55 billion).

Located within the Hon La Economic Zone, the plant will have two turbines. Commercial operation of the first is scheduled for February 2030, with the second due to follow two months later. Expected annual electricity output is about 9.5 billion kilowatt-hours for the national grid.

EVN said equity would cover 20% of the financing, while commercial loans would provide 80%. Its deputy general director, Nguyen Tai Anh, said selection of the engineering, procurement and construction contractor was complete. The contract is to be signed with a consortium of China Energy Engineering Corporation and Vietnam Machinery Installation Corporation (LILAMA).

Quang Trach II forms part of the Quang Trach Power Center, where planned capacity totals about 4,500 MW across three plants. EVN is developing Quang Trach I and II, whose combined designed capacity is nearly 3,015 MW, with investment totalling ₫82.145 trillion (US$3.17 billion).

Vietnam's revised eighth Power Development Plan envisages approximately 22,524 MW of LNG-fired capacity by 2030. It anticipates the development and commissioning of 22 LNG power projects during 2025-2035.
