Bursa Malaysia rises in early trade, with KLCI up 0.31 per cent

Advancing stocks outnumbered decliners 224 to 158, while turnover reached RM98.78 million.

Malaysia’s benchmark share index reached 1,635.88 at 9.10 am on October 5, gaining 5.01 points, or 0.31 per cent. Bursa Malaysia followed Wall Street higher after weaker US payroll growth reduced expectations of an immediate interest-rate increase by the Federal Reserve.

The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI began trading at 1,633.42, an opening gain of 2.55 points against the previous close of 1,630.87. Across the exchange, 224 stocks advanced and 158 declined. Another 337 were unchanged, 2,054 had not traded and 24 were suspended. Trading volume totalled 206.30 million shares, valued at RM98.78 million.

Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng told Bernama that interest rates and developments in West Asia continued to influence sentiment. He noted that the US 10-year yield stood at 5.28 per cent, while Brent crude settled at US$102.25 a barrel.

Among heavyweight stocks, Maybank rose four sen to RM10.06, CIMB added four sen to RM7.69 and Tenaga Nasional increased four sen to RM13.00. IHH Healthcare lost six sen to RM7.74. Samaiden gained 19 sen to RM3.03, while Nestle declined 32 sen to RM89.20.

Other indices also advanced. The FBM Mid 70 rose 28.14 points to 17,510.07, and the FBM ACE added 31.41 points to 5,560.87. The Financial Services Index increased 97.59 points to 19,138.10, while the Energy Index gained 2.57 points to 835.60.
