Some deaths in Utah never come under the authority of the state Office of the Medical Examiner, which leaves families without a postmortem examination.

State medical examiner authority in Utah reaches only a fraction of deaths, somewhere near one in three. The office logged 7,899 death investigations over the course of 2023. "A death can be entirely expected from a legal standpoint and still leave a family with no idea what actually happened medically. That gap is where we work."

Record access is a third consideration. Utah statute shields medical examiner files from open release. Attorneys who want them must first establish standing, ordinarily through written authorization from the legal next of kin, appointment by a court as representative of the estate, or a subpoena or order issued by a judge. An examination commissioned privately produces a report that belongs to the family or their counsel from day one.
