Since the HPV vaccine was made available in the United States in 2006, infections with HPV types that cause most HPV cancers and genital warts have dropped 88% among teen girls and 81% among young adult women. HPV vaccines have also led to fewer teens and young adults getting genital warts and a reduced number of cases of precancers of the cervix in young women. The role that the HPV vaccine plays in helping cut the cases of cervical cancer is further solidified when one considers that while the vaccine has significantly cut cases of the disease since 2008, women who were 27 or older that year and were not eligible for the vaccine have an unchanged risk of developing it.
